Self rostering: Clinician Preferences
December 2025
Departments increasingly want to build rotas that balance service needs with individual clinician preferences. Typically this process is managed through informal conversations, emails, and shared spreadsheets, making it time-consuming and difficult to manage at scale. Clinicians often have limited visibility into how their preferences are captured or applied, while Rota Masters face the challenge of fairly incorporating requests without compromising coverage or compliance. Clinician Preferences was created to solve this by providing a structured, transparent way for clinicians to share their preferences directly within the rota, enabling departments to create rotas that better reflect individual and departmental needs while maintaining transparency, efficiency, and compliance with governance rules.
We are pleased to announce the release of Clinician preferences, the latest addition to our growing offering of features that facilitate self-rostering. Departments can now invite clinicians to select their preferences for upcoming rotas on CLWRota and Medirota.
Clinician preferences allows Rota Masters to give clinicians greater visibility and autonomy over their work, in line with the NHS 10 Point Plan to improve resident doctors’ working lives by providing a way to incorporate Clinician preferences – all while maintaining equitable assignments, operational coverage, and clinical safety.
Rota Masters can:
This workflow mitigates the need for separate spreadsheets, email chains and manual transcription. Instead, the process can be completed entirely on Medirota or CLWRota and fully integrated into the live rota
The Clinician preferences feature is available to all departments using CLWRota, or Medirota.
